Dr. Philippe Girard earned his BA in Political Sciences from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (‘Sciences Po’) and his MA and Ph.D. in History from Ohio University. A native of the French Caribbean, he specializes in the history of the Haitian Revolution. His most recent books are “A Day in Colonial Haiti” (2024) and “Toussaint Louverture: A Revolutionary Life ” (2016). His scholarly articles include “Slave Trading during the French and Haitians Revolutions” (William and Mary Quarterly, October 2019), “New Archival Findings on the Early Life of Toussaint Louverture” (WMQ, Jan. 2013), “Jean-Jacques Dessalines and the Atlantic System” (WMQ, July 2012), and “Toussaint Louverture’s Secret Diplomacy with England and the United States” (WMQ, Jan. 2009).
