David Kay taught night and summer school speech classes at McNeese for 17 years (while also working as an area high school debate coach) before becoming a full-time faculty member in 2007. During his high school teaching career, Kay was named Louisiana Speech Teacher of the Year, Calcasieu Parish High School Teacher of the Year, and was eventually inducted in the Louisiana High School Speech League Hall of Fame. His high school competitors won dozens of individual state speech championships, 3 of his students won NCFL national championships, and his team won the NCFL National Award of Excellence in Debate.
