Hand to perform at National Flute Association convention

McNeese State University Associate Professor of Music Judy Hand has been selected to perform at the 2017 National Flute Association convention Aug. 10-13 in Minneapolis, Minn.

This annual convention draws over 4,000 flutists from around the world.

“I submitted the proposal and recordings for the concert and it was among those chosen from over 500 applicants,” says Hand.

The concert will feature Gates’ Sonatina, the Nocturne, Sonata for Flute and Guitar and Sonata for Flute and Piano.

“The sonatina and both sonatas were all written for me by Keith,” says Hand. “I will also be talking about Keith, our 25-year friendship and collaboration and how some of the music came about.”

Hand teaches flute, chamber music, music history, ear training and class piano at McNeese. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Arkansas and a Master of Music degree and the Doctor of Musical Arts in flute performance from Louisiana State University.

She has toured England and Wales with the International Flute Orchestra and has been awarded numerous arts grants, including a Louisiana Artist Fellowship. Hand is currently principal flute in the Lake Charles and Rapides symphonies.
