Transfer Students find a Home at McNeese
McNeese State University juniors Cadence Durham and Zachary Brewster are bringing their professional dreams to life since transferring to McNeese.
Durham, a biological science major from Ragley, transferred to McNeese from a private school in North Carolina.
She saw major draws to McNeese, like its affordability and reputation for outstanding STEM programs.
“The comprehensive program with a pre-dentistry concentration aligns perfectly with my future goals,” Durham said. She plans to attend dental school and specialize in orthodontics.
“The research and internship opportunities further solidified my decision,” she said. “McNeese felt like a natural fit.”
At McNeese, Durham found that the small class sizes enhance networking and academic support. Plus, being located in Lake Charles offers ample opportunities for her to gain real-world experience at local clinics, hospitals and dental offices.
“Beyond academics, the student culture is vibrant,” she said. “The excitement around sporting events adds a unique charm to the university.
“Also, professors genuinely care about building relationships with students and are always eager to help,” She explained that the state-of-the-art labs, dedicated professors, low student-to-teacher ratio and easy-to-navigate campus are a few of McNeese’s best aspects.
Brewster, a mechanical engineering major from Moss Bluff, transferred from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
“As a freshman going to a university without knowing anyone and being so far away from home, connecting with people was very difficult,” Brewster said. He took a few semesters off and worked in the plumbing industry.
“After two years of crawling through hot attics and coming home sore every day, I decided to go back to college.”
As a university close to home, McNeese was a great fit.
When he transferred, he was impressed by how many students attend McNeese and how many labs the engineering department has.
“I was especially surprised by the industrial robotics lab in the Engineering Technology Lab.”
Both students are well on their way to achieving their career goals.
Brewster plans to find a summer internship with a robotics company. “After graduation, I intend to work in the robotics field as a mechanical engineer.”
Durham has built a strong academic foundation and grown the confidence to pursue her professional goals.
“The support at McNeese makes my career path feel achievable,” she said.
