McNeese’s NAACP Is Creating Community Leaders
McNeese State University’s Black students develop into strong leaders who advocate for minorities in their community by being part of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People).
According to the organization’s website, the NAACP strives to create a society in which all individuals have equal rights without racial discrimination by developing a new generation of civil rights and community leaders.
McNeese junior Jacara Gates, of Roanoke, Virginia, is the president of the McNeese NAACP chapter.
“I joined the organization because I believe in creating intellectual and educational opportunities for individuals,” Gates explained.
The organization hosts educational and uplifting events including NAACP week, which has activities surrounding Black history. The chapter provides a supportive community for Black students as they work together to support their community and each other.
“The NAACP is essential at McNeese because it creates opportunities and supports the promotion of minority groups,” Gates said.
The NAACP meets at 6 p.m. in the La Jeunesse Room on scheduled meeting days. Any students interested in joining can contact the organization at 318-416-2187.
