McNeese Junior Participates in Research Symposium
McNeese State University junior, Allison Donnelly, conducted research in the Department of Chemistry and Physics on using green solvents for advanced biomedical applications. The naturally derived materials hold significant promise in the development of biocompatible and environmentally friendly systems.
“I was attracted to this research because of its multidisciplinary nature. It combines the natural, synthetic and medical science fields while offering a well-rounded and flexible approach to understanding and solving problems,” says Donnelly, a Lake Charles biological sciences major with a concentration in pre-medicine.
Donnelly became involved in this research group after reaching out to her chemistry instructor Phoenix Sconzert-Hall to inquire about opportunities within the department. He connected her with several faculty members whom she reached out to and stayed with the subject that captured her interest most. The research team is comprised of chemistry faculty members Dr. Vidura Thalangamaarachchige and Dr. Niwanthi Dissanayake Ralalage and McNeese students CJ Semien, Owen Kirkland and Haashir Ouadir.
“In the short-term future, I plan to further develop our current research through a deeper literature review, continued experimentation and optimization with the goal of publishing and presenting the work,” says Donnelly. “Long term, I hope to build on the skills I’ve gained from this experience while continuing to engage in research throughout medical school.”
She added, “McNeese offered me the ideal balance as a student who prioritizes academics while remaining close to home. Students at McNeese get a unique opportunity to create connections with professors and instructors, fostering growth both in and out of the classroom. Additionally, McNeese’s strong honors program has provided me with valuable opportunities that further elevate my academic experience and played a significant role in my decision to attend.”
To students interested in pursuing undergraduate research, Donnelly said “I hope you remember that you are a steward of your own success. While classes provide the foundation for knowledge, research offers a space for application and innovation. Mentors can help guide you and provide opportunities for success, but ultimately your progress depends on your work ethic and initiative.”
