Concrete Research Looks at Environmental Effects on Outdoor Design

Shreewan Rupakheti, a 2019 engineering graduate and current master’s degree student, is conducting research on the environmental effects of concrete deterioration.

It’s widely understood that changes in temperature cause concrete degradation, but Shreewan hopes to provide quantified data that could improve and increase the longevity of outdoor concrete design.

As part of his research, Shreewan, who is working with Associate Professor of Engineering Dr. Ahmed Abdel-Mohti, has placed load-bearing concrete slab samples in both outside and inside environments and is tracking the differences.

Dr. Abdel-Mohti recently received a grant from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Foundation to establish a PCI Studio at McNeese and integrate prestressed concrete design, fabrication and construction into the civil engineering curriculum.
