McNeese to Host Concert Featuring Christopher Adkins

The McNeese State University W.A. and Dorothy Hanna Performing Arts Department will present a free concert featuring guest cellist, Christopher Adkins, on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. in Tritico Theatre. He will be accompanied on piano throughout the program by Dr. Lina Morita, McNeese professor of music.
Adkins, who has been with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra since 1987, serves as its principal cellist and Fannie & Stephen S. Kahn Chair. He received his degrees from the University of North Texas and Yale University and has held the position of principal cellist with the New Haven Symphony and positions with the Milwaukee and Denver symphonies. He joined the music faculty at the Southern Methodist University Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas in 1988 where he teaches repertoire and studio classes to undergraduate and graduate cello students.
Adkins will begin his program with J.S. Bach’s “Pastorale, BWV 590” followed by selections from Bach’s “Suite No. 3 in C Major for Cello Solo, BWV 1009.” He’ll conclude the first half of his program with “Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70” by Robert Schumann.
He will close the recital with the theme “Once Upon a Time …” that will include compositions by Maurice Ravel, Antonin Dvořák, Engelbert Humperdinck, Jules Massenet, Paul Hindemith and Christoph Gluck. This recital is made possible by the support of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Principal Chair Endowment Program.
