McNeese Student Looks for Antibiotic Resistance in Calcasieu Parish

Payge Roberts, a recent McNeese State University graduate from DeRidder, researched antibiotic microbial resistance through surveillance of antibiotic resistance genes (AGRs) in Calcasieu Parish during her senior year.
Currently the research concerning ARGs in Louisiana is slim, so Roberts wanted to find out what was happening in Calcasieu Parish. She sampled water from six locations in the parish to look for three specific AGRs. These genes allow bacteria to survive exposure to antibiotics.
Roberts has always been fascinated with anything related to the medical field and decided to research a topic that would help others and further her own understanding.
“I was interested in researching antibiotic resistant bacteria because not only is it important for public knowledge and health, but I also wanted to learn more about the presence of ARG within the surrounding area where I live,” she said.
Roberts had no prior experience in research and she highly recommends that new students talk to their professors about research opportunities. She says research is a wonderful opportunity for any student, especially those who have a passion for discovering new things or learning something new.
“I spoke with Dr. Caroline Hennigan to discuss options and a game plan for my research topic. She was so helpful and patient throughout this entire process,” Roberts said. “She helped guide the way and played a major part in the foundation of my love for this research.”
Hennigan is an assistant professor in the department of biological sciences.
Roberts was invited to present her research at four events this spring. During the events she connected with other student researchers and learned about topics she never imagined.
Roberts plans to become a physician assistant and is currently working as a medical assistant. She chose McNeese because of the community.
“I have always felt like I belonged and could talk to any professor if I needed help. I have made great friends and memories and have grown so much throughout my college experience. The people of McNeese and the Lake Charles community have always been supportive, encouraging and uplifting,” she said.
