McNeese Student Interns at Local Law Center

McNeese State University senior, Azeezat Onafuwa, completed an internship with the Southwest Louisiana Law Center in downtown Lake Charles.
Onafuwa, from Lagos, Nigeria, learned to approach clients with compassion and respect. She also discovered that often they are strangers to the legal process and never expected to be where they are.
“My participation in this internship helped by giving me basic knowledge and experience of how at least a part of the legal system works,” she said. “I will use what I learned in my internship as an alignment for what I want in my future career.”
Onafuwa is a humanities major with a concentration in pre-law. She chose this major because it helped hone in certain skills she wanted and served as strong preparation for law school.
“I used my research, writing and analysis skills a lot in my internship. The political and legal theory knowledge I gained in the classroom made a lot of the things I saw, heard or read about familiar,” she expressed.
Onafuwa realized that multiple factors come into play when making decisions or interacting with people and things could be more complex than what theory prescribes.
She chose McNeese for undergraduate degree because it’s closer to family and is cost-effective.
“I would advise students seeking an internship to pursue opportunities online, through connections or by asking their advisers,” she explained.
