McNeese Farm Hosts FFA Invitational
High school students got a taste of the professional agriculture industry during the FFA invitational at the McNeese State University farm recently.
Nearly 1,500 students from Louisiana and Texas attended the event for its 60th year, making it the most attended practice contest in Louisiana.
The event featured contests in dairy foods, floriculture, meat identification, nursery and landscaping, poultry judging and veterinary science. Students were tasked with examining, identifying and judging samples and specimens from their content area, as well as taking a written test.
“We have a great partnership with the McNeese farm and great participation from McNeese faculty,” Spencer Stelly, FFA agriculture education specialist for the southern Louisiana region, said.
At the McNeese farm, students gain hands-on experience with the agriculture they have been studying in class. The farm provides a diverse population of livestock, including cattle, horses, pigs, chickens and sheep, and agricultural land used for growing corn, soybeans, sorghum and forage.
“We love coming to McNeese,” Stelly said.
The next FFA event at the McNeese farm will be the regional competition on Thursday, March 21. Students who place will advance to state.
