McNeese to Host 2019 E-Week

McNeese State University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science is celebrating National Engineers Week with several events and activities Feb. 17-23.

Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Engineers Week raises awareness about the contributions of engineers and brings engineering to life for students, educators and parents, according to Nikos Kiritsis, dean of the college.

On Monday, Feb. 18, students of all ages, their parents and interested members of the community are invited to tour McNeese’s facilities and learn more about the engineering profession during a community open house from 6-8 p.m. in the Engineering Technology Lab Building next to Drew Hall.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, an open house for area high schools will be held from 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m. on campus. More than 450 students from 17 high schools will tour McNeese’s modern facilities, talk to faculty and students and participate in various skill contests for prizes.

A new robotic challenge will be offered this year based on the Arduino micro-controller. Students will have to design a robot that can pilot itself through a specific obstacle course. The team whose robot can navigate from the start box to the parking zone and back to the start box, in the shortest time and with the fewest penalties, will win the challenge.

The week’s activities conclude Thursday, Feb. 21, with an engineering banquet held to recognize outstanding students, faculty and current engineers from the community.
