McNeese Hosts Piano Duo
The McNeese State University W.A. and Dorothy Hanna Performing Arts Department will present a free concert featuring guest pianists, Dr. Shao-Shan Chen and Dr. David Sutanto, on Friday, Oct. 3, in Tritico Theatre at 7 p.m.
The husband-and-wife duo are professors of piano at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas, and have performed many concerts as duo-pianists. They will be performing works by Bach, Beethoven, Pei-Xun Chen, Ginastera and Wagner. The finale is a four-hands piano piece from the “Wizard of Oz.”
Chen, a Taiwanese-born pianist, began piano lessons at the age of five. She earned a Diploma degree in piano performance from the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, a Master of Music degree from The Boston Conservatory in Massachusetts and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. She has performed as piano soloist and chamber musician at the Carnegie Recital Hall and the Columbia Artists Management Inc. Hall in New York City, as well as in Boston, Cincinnati, the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, Austin, Texas, Lafayette, New Orleans and the South Texas areas. Internationally, she has performed and taught masterclasses in France, Taiwan, Indonesia, Spain, Venezuela and Australia.
Pianist Sutanto gained international recognition when he won the 1997 Artists International Audition in New York, which resulted in his critically acclaimed New York recital debut at the Carnegie Recital Hall in 1998. Other awards include winner of the 1996 Chopin Foundation Piano Competition in New York, recipient of the Arthur B. Whitney Award in Boston and top prize winner of the National Yamaha Piano Competition in Indonesia, among others. He has also performed throughout the United States and internationally in France, the Dominican Republic, Taiwan and Indonesia. Orchestral appearances include soloist with Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, The Boston Conservatory Orchestra, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Philharmonia Orchestra, Corpus Christi Chamber Orchestra and Del Mar College Concert Band. Dr. Sutanto received his education from The Boston Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music in New York City and University of Cincinnati.
