McNeese Honors College Open House
McNeese State University’s Honors College is hosting an open house for prospective students and their families on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Drew Hall room 234, located on Joe Dumars Dr.
Qualifications for the Honors College for incoming first-year students are a 27 or higher on the ACT (or about 1250 on the SAT) and a 3.4 GPA. Honors College students take honors classes together and complete projects for other classes to earn honors credit.
“I think the two major advantages of the Honors College are the small size that allows students to get to know each other well, and the scholarship that covers tuition and fees, as well as significant stipends for housing and meal plans,” explained Dr. Scott Goins, director of McNeese Honors College.
Honors College students can take advantage of priority registration, individualized academic counseling, small class size and personal attention from professors. The Honors Lounge offers a place for honors students to study, discuss issues, exchange ideas and socialize. Special honors events (seminars, field trips, and conferences), cultural opportunities and social activities provide frequent interaction among students and between students and faculty.
“We offer opportunities for students to study abroad, and we also encourage students to do research, so that they will be ready for a career or graduate school,” Goins said. “We have an excellent record for helping place students in medical school, law school, and other graduate programs.”
“The Honors courses I have taken have truly enhanced my experience at McNeese. I have the opportunity to dive deeper and think critically about topics discussed in my classes,” said Madelyn Furman, an Honors College student. “Being in the Honors College allows me to make the most of my education at McNeese!”
