McNeese State University junior, Christabel Simon-Alade, got an early start working in the medical field conducting research at Louisiana State University.
Simon-Alade, a biological sciences major from Nigeria, chose to study at McNeese because of its academic rigor and affordability for an international student.
“I want to study medicine to become a symbol of hope to people,” she said.
She completed her internship conducting biomedical research with Dr. Craig Hart, the primary investigator, and graduate student Sunday Negedu at LSU.
“Everything I learned from working at the lab has given me more insight on biology as a whole,” she explained. “It has prepared me for my future as a medical doctor.”
Interning showed her that there is always room for improvement and learning.
“Now, I understand more about the specialties of medicine I would like to pursue. The internship has also made me a stronger applicant for medical school.”
Simon-Alade shared her advice for other McNeese students applying to internships.
“Internships for students in science are competitive. Apply early and present a strong application,” she said.
Simon-Alade said she will continue to broaden her knowledge of science and medicine in preparation for her future career in medicine.
