Description
POSITION INFORMATION: The Office of Advising invites students to apply for the position of Peer Advisor (2 positions available). This position is a one-semester, part-time position. All student employees are hired on a semester basis.
EMPLOYMENT DATE: Positions are available immediately. Student positions are evaluated each semester to determine if a student employee is eligible to return for future semesters.
Responsibilities
ROLES/DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The peer advisor will work closely with academic advisors to help onboard incoming freshmen, continuing students, and sophomore students within the Department of Advising.
- The peer advisor will assist students in registering for classes in Banner Self Service Portal.
- The peer advisor will be able to assist students in completing online withdrawal request post meeting of student with Office of Advising Advisor.
- The peer advisor will assist students both in hands-on demonstrations and creation of how-to materials in campus learning management systems (Moodle or Canvas).
- The peer advisor will assist students both in hands-on demonstrations and creation of how-to materials in Banner Self-Service/ McNeese Portal.
- The peer advisor will assist students both in hands-on demonstrations and creation of how-to materials on Navigate Student and Degree Works.
- The peer advisor will assist students both in hands-on demonstrations and creation of how-to materials in Microsoft Office 365 products available to all students.
- The peer advisor will answer routine questions and escalate phone calls to the appropriate advisor when needed.
- The peer advisor will make reminder phone calls and confirm attendance for upcoming advising appointments.
- The peer advisor will send routine text messages using Mongoose platform and emails from central advising inbox to students under the direction of advising staff about upcoming events and important dates.
- The peer advisor will help to create social media posts and videos for the office of advising.
- The peer advisor will assist in assembling folders with advising materials provided by the staff.
- The peer advisor will be available for online and in-person appointments regarding general questions and can escalate any in-depth issues to the appropriate advisor.
- The peer advisor will need to occasionally work outside of office hours to assist students in registration processes within group sessions.
- The peer advisor will also perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
REQUIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
At the time of application, student must:
- Have a grade point average of a 3.0 or higher and be in good academic standing
- Be a second semester Sophomore or higher classification
- Have attended at least two semesters at McNeese
- Be active in at least one McNeese student organization
At the time of employment, student must:
- Be enrolled as a full-time student (12+ credit hours)
- Demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills
- Possess a positive attitude and be open minded to learning new processes and helping students with various levels of university process knowledge
Preferences:
- Prior training in student confidentiality (FERPA)
- Prior experience assisting students on campus
