McNeese Visual Arts Students Create Activist-Art Installation
McNeese State University visual art students are hosting a temporary, activist-art installation and art giveaway for the McNeese community on Wednesday, April 19, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Grand Gallery in the Shearman Fine Arts Annex building.
“The conceptual basis for this project involves the plastic bottle waste pollution that we collectively face as citizens of this planet,” explained Ken Baskin, professor of visual arts at McNeese.
For the project, students learn about slip-casting and two-part plaster molds. The casting of the plastic bottles in clay is intended to create awareness of alternatives to plastic and the necessity for recycling plastics.
Spectators are welcome to take one of the clay bottles and by removing the ceramic bottles from the exhibition during the interactive art giveaway, they become part of the solution in “cleaning up” the bottles that litter the floor of the installation space.
A limited number of ceramic bottle replicas (approximately 150) are available to visitors on a first come, first served basis. For more information contact Kenneth Baskin at 337-475-5053.
