McNeese Student Interns at MD Anderson Cancer Center
McNeese State University senior, Damilola Iguwe, worked alongside leading cancer researchers during her summer internship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, where she took part in scientific research.
Iguwe, of Lagos, Nigeria, has a passion for understanding the biological mechanisms that drive human health and disease.
This led her to study biological science at McNeese. “I chose McNeese because of its strong academic programs, supportive faculty and close-knit community,” Iguwe explained.
“The best part of the internship was the hands-on experience I gained, working alongside leading researchers and contributing to meaningful scientific projects,” she said.
Iguwe used her knowledge of cell signaling pathways, molecular biology techniques and data analysis to understand and contribute to the research projects. “The techniques I learned in my McNeese biology and chemistry classes were directly applicable during my internship.”
One of the highlights of the internship was presenting her research findings at symposiums, which allowed her to share her work and receive feedback from experts in the biomedical field.
Iguwe’s internship gave her significant experience and knowledge.
“Working in a team environment and learning from experienced professionals showed me how different perspectives and expertise create innovative solutions,” Iguwe explained.
In the future, she plans to become a physician-scientist in oncology.
“I developed skills and learned how to work within a research institution,” Iguwe said. “The connections I made are valuable professional relationships for my career.”
Iguwe suggests that McNeese students should seek internships that align with their academic and career goals.
“Networking and reaching out to potential mentors are crucial steps,” she said. “Be open to learning and adapting. Internships are valuable opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.”
