McNeese Presents Honorary Doctorate to Captain Lee Jackson
During the 166th McNeese State University commencement ceremony May 22 at the McNeese Townsley Law Arena, the university conferred an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree on Captain Lee Jackson, founder and chief executive officer of Jackson Offshore Operators, LLC, a marine transportation company out of New Orleans. Jackson also serves as a member of the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.
“This is the highest honor that the university can bestow upon an individual,” said Dr. Kedrick Nicholas, interim McNeese president. “Capt. Lee Jackson represents the maritime industry with distinction and his substantial professional achievements, his passion for service and his ardent support for higher education in Louisiana clearly warrant the granting of the honorary doctorate.”
In addition, Jackson serves as chairman of the Louisiana River Pilot Review and Oversight Board, where he plays a vital role in safeguarding public trust and maritime integrity by overseeing pilot conduct, accidents and safety matters affecting the Mississippi and Calcasieu Rivers. His career reflects his commitment to service, safety and responsible stewardship of one of the nation’s most critical economic corridors.
With more than 25 years of experience in the maritime industry, Jackson also holds a United States Coast Guard master’s license with an Any Gross Tonnage credential—one of the highest professional distinctions in the field.
As a UL System board member, Jackson is an advocate for higher education, contributing to the governance and strategic direction of one of the state’s largest public higher education systems. Through his advocacy, he also provides philanthropic support to advance student success, including contributions to scholarships that expand access to higher education.
He is a founding member of Open Waters Louisiana and a member of the UL System Maritime Academy Advisory Board and has been a driving force in creating meaningful educational and career pathways for Louisiana students, particularly those from underserved communities.
Jackson serves in leadership roles on the boards of the New Orleans Business Council, the National Ocean Industry Association and the Offshore Marine Service Association.
