McNeese NSBE Supports Black Engineering Students
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) offers black engineering students at McNeese State University a supportive community that helps them thrive academically.
The NSBE is an organization dedicated to increasing the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact their community.
McNeese junior Ngozika Lilian Peter, from Mozambique, is a mechanical engineering major, first-generation student and president of the NSBE.
“As a black student pursuing engineering, the NSBE provides me with a supportive network of like-minded individuals who understand the unique challenges and opportunities I face,” Peter said.
The NSBE at McNeese offers study jams, workshops, mentorships and game nights. The students attend conventions with hundreds of companies to network with and participate in outreach programs to empower minorities pursuing careers in STEM fields.
Involvement with the NSBE has provided Peter with friendships, professional growth and networking, internship and job opportunities.
“This organization empowers me to thrive academically and professionally by offering guidance, encouragement and valuable connections,” Peter said.
He explained that the NSBE plays a crucial role in the university environment by providing support for students of color pursuing careers in STEM.
“By promoting diversity and inclusion, the NSBE contributes to a richer and more vibrant academic atmosphere, reflecting the real-world diversity of engineering professions,” Peter explained.
“Together, we’re not just students. We’re a family united by a common goal of breaking barriers and making a lasting impact in the engineering field.”
