Dr. Steven Rainey earned his undergraduate degree (B.S. Geology) and Master’s Degree (M.A. Geography) from The University of Texas at Austin and his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. He has been awarded a National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant and two Fulbright awards for dissertation research on farmer soil knowledge systems in the Guatemalan highlands, research on Amazonian Dark Earths (ADEs), and dam impacts on the Madeira River tributary of the Amazon River in Brazil. Dr. Rainey’s research interests include cultural and political ecology, Latin American geography, environmental geography, ethnopedology and ethnoecology, geographic information systems in human-environment research, ecodevelopment, and sustainable development.
