McNeese Student Group Receives Fifth Merit Award From SHRM 

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) awarded a 2023-2024 Superior Merit Award designation to the McNeese State University’s SHRM student chapter for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student members.  

The SHRM Student Chapter Merit Award program encourages the development of more effective student chapters that provide outstanding activities and projects.   

“When I first joined, I was very shy and did not speak out a lot, but participating in the group has encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone,” said Amanda Allen, current SHRM president. “SHRM is a welcoming organization that has allowed me to network and has opened doors for internships.” 

During the 2023-2024 academic year the McNeese chapter was led by an Executive Council comprised of the following: Karin Shinn, fall president; Brynlee Boudreaux, fall vice president and spring president; Amanda Allen, spring vice president; Logan Jones, secretary; and Bryce Carter, treasurer. 

Together they led the organization to its award-winning status for the fifth year in a row by providing professional development sessions for members, community service projects and recognition. Members also participate in paid internships and have the opportunity to sit for the SHRM-CP exam during their senior year.  

“I have met some amazing people and it really solidified that this is the field I am meant to be in,” Allen said. “Also, I landed my current job as a human resources intern through networking with relationships I have built from my involvement with SHRM.” 

The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the College of Business and is planning another award-winning year. The last meeting of the semester will be “Conflict in the Workplace” with panelists from local companies on Wednesday, Nov. 6, in BBC 122.
