Audacity
Shelly Rodrigue
__________
I don’t want to talk about
the woman in Walmart
who asks me to pray with her
after she admits to stalking
my wife and I through the aisles
simply because two women in love
shopping for groceries somehow
requires divine intervention
at the behest of a stranger
Instead, I want to talk about
the way light falls through redbud trees
in spring, casting blotchy shadows
across the streets and
illuminating bright new green leaves
at their tops where tiny pinkish flowers
bloom in audacity
right off winter’s last chill
how through the seasons
they live their lives
without anyone praying
they were something different
