Robbie Gamble

__________

Last night I saw the Subaru in my dreams.
Now they have dragged my dog bed from the trunk,
stuffed it with boxes, tote bags, a duffel big enough
to hold three of me. This is not a good sign.
Luggage means absence, and though I do not
know how to mark the passage of time, I feel
somehow a big wait is coming before I will
get to see her again. Emmett, she cries, as she
hauls me into her lap, drapes herself across
my ribs. She is my first love, and I am hers.
I am sure of this. She has been absent more
and more lately, and I lie across the threshold
to her room, not knowing what threshold means:
something about loneliness, distance, change.
