__________
“My happiness is a documented fact in the
mind of God.”
– Jericho Brown
Everything slips from
me as though I were in
freefall – I’m reaching up
but there’s nothing there
to hold – and then I think
maybe I’m being held and
it’s the world that’s falling
away from me – then
I remember it’s written
somewhere my happiness
is me being me but it’s
taken a lifetime to know
how impossible that is –
how beautiful even to come
close how very like a miracle
all magnificent and bruised
just to see the path – to feel it
under my feet – what matters
most is the struggle – call it
melee or brawl or making love
it’s the body – the will – and
the distance between them
always the journey –
never the arriving
