Because I’ve never really left school, summer, to me, is the pause of school, the lack of school, the time to take a deep breath before the return to school but, nonetheless, permanently connected to school, and I’m thrilled that we’re releasing our Retro Summer issue just as we turn back toward why we’re all here: school. Colette Tennant captures this adjacency beautifully in her poem “Third Grade Math, Intro to Philosophy, and Other Disciplines.”

Aiman Tariq, third-year MFA candidate, proposed the Retro Summer theme for Boudin back in her first year, and I’ve been eagerly anticipating the issue ever since. Aiman has curated a marvelous collection full of warmth and nostalgia and yearning, and, moreover, she did the hard work of not just reading and selecting, but building the issue . . . during the summer!

Take that deep breath and get in some end-of-summer Boudin reading before you start whatever is next. Enjoy!
