At five years old, my daughter first heard the phrase, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” and her response was, “But what if we don’t have any sugar?”
Let’s face it: life isn’t always sweet. For some, the sun has not come out yet to thaw the frost. And that’s okay. Generally speaking, it’s been rough for a lot of us out here, and I’m no exception. No matter how many flowers may bloom after Winter, Spring doesn’t always bring with it the hope or renewal that the season’s ideology promises. Sometimes, life gives you lemons, and you don’t have what it takes to make lemonade. And that’s okay, too. The way I see it, there’s growth in refusing to ignore the things that we wish weren’t there at all.
Thank you to our lovely and supportive staff here at Boudin. A special big thank you to Karris Rae and Taryn White, whose devotion to their friends/colleagues as well as to the magazine is invaluable and so very sweet (forgive me for one last play on lemonade).
And finally, thank you for sitting in the dark with me for a bit and to everyone who shared their work. I truly hope that you find these works as refreshing as I do. Cheers.
