When my friends and family go on vacation, I’m almost always the one they call to look after their pets while they’re gone. Over the past few years, I’ve befriended many animals, like Hercules, the Great Dane; Bobo One and Bobo two; both tortoises; Bleu, the beta fish; and Roux and Ashlyn, the pit bulls. Just to name a few. Before you ask, no. I do not have a favorite…unless I’m currently pet sitting for you. Then your pet automatically becomes my current favorite.

Well…second to my own cat, Tilly. She’s a pretty, dainty tuxedo cat who takes up my entire bed. I’m sorry, I mean her entire bed. This is where she supervises me while I work at my desk. When she’s decided I’ve earned my mandatory break, and she’s waited long enough for my attention, she jumps up on my desk and flops across whatever I’m working on. I love her very much; I could talk about her for hours.

What I loved most about reading through submissions for our Second Annual Pet Writing Contest was getting to see how much each and every author loves their own pet. All authors who submitted to this issue so clearly care for their pets, both past and living. Reading each and every word has truly been a delightful experience. Every pet deserves an ode written about them, and I am so thrilled that these authors have taken this opportunity to do so.

I hope that, as you read this month’s issue, you “Ooo,” “Aww,” turn into a complete puddle over some of these pet pictures, and maybe shed a tear or two, just like I did.
