Laissez les bon temps rouler!
Our Mardi Gras Microfiction Contest on the theme of excess was probably the most fun issue I’ve ever put together, and I loved every story I read. The flashes fell into two camps: those heavy in Mardi Gras and New Orleans lore, and those heavy in excess, but less lore. My favorites in the latter camp were oddly symbiotic (so many featuring hair!) that I decided to produce an issue that took the idea of excess in unexpected directions.
The musicality of one of in the former camp kept bringing me back, over and over. I read the single sentence out loud every time (and hope you will too), near-breathless, and teary at the end. “Bienvenue” by Michelle Rose is a sweet song of a story well-deserving of our prize.
