Overlapping Definitions of Infinity

In childhood infinite time is waiting and waiting and waiting for something to happen – when reaching the moment of the dripping ice cream cone takes one forever two forevers three forevers more – while in adult life there is the infinity between deciding to quit a job and finding the next one so you can actually walk down those stairs carrying your box like you never were the kind of person who takes the elevator – or the time between knowing you’re pregnant and having an actual child in the car seat listening to Down By The Bay on repeat.

Carol Dorf is a Zoeglossia fellow, whose books include Theory-Headed Dragon. Their writing appears on the Poetry Foundation website, and in the journals that include Pleiades, About Place, Cutthroat,The Museum of Americana, Exposition Review, Unlikely Stories, The Journal of Humanistic Mathematics, Scientific American, and Maintenant. They are founding poetry editor of Talking Writing, and taught math in Berkeley USD.
