In 1982 Joe Nussbaum, then Vice President of the Student Government Association at Texas A&M University started The Big Event as a way for students to say "Thank You" to the surrounding community. Nussbaum evisioned a one-day service project where residents of Bryan and College Station would be shown appreciation for their continued support of Texas A&M University students during their college careers. He had no idea that what started as a community service project for one community would turn in to one of the largest national community service events run by students.

Since The Big Events origination this "one big day" has expanded to over 75 universities across the nation with tens of thousands of students, faculty and staff participating in giving back to the members of the community.

This is the first year we are bringing this large-scale community service project to the Lake Charles area. With campus participation and the support of the community we are hoping to have a great success for many years to come.

Through service-oriented activities, The Big Event promotes campus and community unity as students come together for one day to express their gratitude for the support from the surrounding community.
