Mixed-race free women of color, called quadroons, are portrayed stereotypically in literature. Quadroons were introduced to groups of men at Quadroon Balls. While marriage between the whites and quadroons was forbidden, placage a contractual living arrangement was common practice.
Dr. Clark translated Catholic Church records of the day from French which show that the quadroons of New Orleans frequently did marry. (This, however, did not extend to the Haitian refugees who had a vastly different experience.)
