The American Alligator: From Marsh to Medicine

Alligators and crocodiles can be very aggressive toward members of their own species.  Their aggressive behaviors sometime lead to serious injuries, including the loss of entire limbs.  However, the massive injuries most of heal without infection, despite the fact that these animals live in waters that harbor many potentially-infectious bacteria.  Our research has focused on the immune systems of crocodilians, and includes the search for new antibiotics for human use.
