Unashamed tourist,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">traveling alone, I slept the first night at Canterbury\u2019s Pilgrim Inn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Maybe because I was by myself, they tucked me in a corner room<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">under the thatched roof eaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I thought it was cute and cozy until the next morning,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I had to perform a mermaid move to get out of the soapy water<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">filling the cute old bathtub with almost no ceiling clearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">That might have been a warning which I blithely ignored,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">determined after my scones and clotted cream and tea breakfast,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">to visit the Canterbury Tales tourist center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">From the outside, it looked perfect for an English teacher who has<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">loved Chaucer for decades. However, after I put on my headphones<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">and entered the main room, all I saw were ventriloquist dolls<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">dressed in Renaissance clothes, reciting the Canterbury tales<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">through plastic lips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Desperate for escape, I saw an exit sign,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">took off my headphones and rushed through the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It shut with a bang so loud, the noise seemed to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">push the small of my back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">After my eyes adjusted to the light,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I realized there was no doorknob on that side of door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I turned to see I was in a very old graveyard,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">surrounded by what looked like a Dickens movie set \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">old tombstones and one raven who<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">cocked his head in curiosity at my presence,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">seemed to wink me a welcome with his shiny black eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In three seconds, I had gone from Chaucer to Poe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">With my raven friend squawk-walking behind,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I traced the perimeter guarded by<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">an iron fence surrounding the whole graveyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The fence was twisted and black as ancient sins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It had one gate locked with thick chains that&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">looked like they had once collared Cerberus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Had I fallen further from Poe to Dante?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I was trapped and wouldn\u2019t be missed for a long while with my family<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">5,000 miles away, and Oxford not expecting me for three days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">When I looked up in desperation, I saw, in a window,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">two ladies having tea three stories up<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">in a building adjacent to the graveyard. I picked up small stones,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">threw them at the glass, my raven not sure how to cheer at this point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The third stone hit with a plink. Her book, <em>Religion in The Handmaid\u2019s Tale: a Brief Guide<\/em>, was published in 2019 to coincide with Atwood\u2019s publication of <em>The Testaments<\/em>. Her poems have won various awards and have been nominated for Pushcart Prizes along with being published in various journals, including <em>Prairie Schooner<\/em>, <em>Rattle<\/em>, <em>Southern Poetry Review<\/em>, and <em>Ireland Poetry Review<\/em>.
