The water stitches up the cracked earth and I don\u2019t want to disturb it. I want it to know it\u2019s welcome, that the South is thirsty.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-medium-font-size\">\u201cCan you taste the salt?!\u201d she asks me, she speaks first.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-medium-font-size\">All I taste is the way it smells outside, like wet grass.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-medium-font-size\">She stomps on the ground sending her body in circles. Her arms extended, she\u2019s spinning, drinking the rain in her bell-bottoms with sewed on patches of pop-culture, an oversized white tshirt. I\u2019m there, too.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-medium-font-size\">\u201cCan you? Can you taste the salt?!\u201d \n\u201cYes! I can taste it! It\u2019s just like the ocean, isn\u2019t it?\u201d I say aloud. \n\u201cAhhh, yes, the sea waters us and like plants we\u2019ll grow!\u201d \n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-medium-font-size\">Yesterday she laid in bed not sleeping, motionless awake, all day. Her happiness makes me wonder when it will end. When will the rain stop tasting like salt? What length of time do we have? She\u2019s not like rain in the middle of a drought. She\u2019s like somewhere tropical, somewhere that rains while it\u2019s sunny, somewhere with cyclones and then perfect weather the next day. Somewhere people want to be until it\u2019s dangerous.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-medium-font-size\">I stayed because, who else? Because I love her entirely, because I\u2019m\u2026because what am I?<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-medium-font-size\">\u201cOur stomping is making a little lake!\u201d \n\u201cA lake?\u201d all I see is mud, a patch where grass won\u2019t grow for months. \u201cAh, yes, a muddy lake!\u201d \n\u201cWoohoo!\u201d \n\u201cWoohoo, it\u2019s rain!\u201d\n\u201cI\u2019m so glad you joined me.\u201d \n\u201cYou asked me to.\u201d\n\u201cBut you didn\u2019t have to.\u201d \n\u201cYea, you\u2019re right! It\u2019s getting cold isn\u2019t it?\u201d \n\u201cI can\u2019t feel a thing.\u201d\n\u201cYea, me neither.\u201d\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>__________<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Aubrey Lozano-Cofield<\/strong> has an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Queens University of Charlotte.
