Zion, Gordon Lee\u2014\nwe must have seemed so proud\n\nwalking out of cinder block locker rooms \nin our loud, clean purple. Our sweat bands, \ntacky gloves, double sets of calf socks.\n\nThe prep swag, eyes bright and dumb. \n<em>Ain't nothing like a Tiger on a Friday night <\/em>\nthe mantra, <em>Welcome to the Jungle<\/em>\n\nevery autumn Friday night since I was seven. \nWhite helmets with a purple paw print, \npurple stripe, purple paw print stickers\n\nfor touchdowns, for tackles\u2014mine came \nby way of interceptions, deflected passes, \nquick calves, chest glued to their best\n\nguy's upfield shoulder, roving beyond \nthe hash, stepping up in the flat \nto set the edge, run the halfback down\n\ninto the hard grass. But what do I know? \nWe played a little football. Now Tylon \nis at Wharton. Will is still alive,\n\nI hope. Chris is not.\nBJ we've talked about. Thad's engaged \nand teaching and seems better now.\n\nI ran into Alex a few weeks ago\u2014\nI had wanted to make him my best man. \nMaybe it's not all gone, all preterite.\n\nAll that purple, that swagger \nand shade. It felt so close to perfect, \nin those days, to hurt.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">__________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>AJ White<\/strong> has served as coordinator of the Levis Reading Prize and as lead copy editor of <em>Blackbird<\/em>. He has taught English and creative writing to high school and university students, attended the Sewanee Writers Conference, and holds degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University, where his work was awarded the Thomas Gray Poetry Prize, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a Morehead-Cain Scholar.
