These system-wide policies are described on the <a href=\"http:\/\/ulsystem.edu\/assets\/docs\/searchable\/boards\/A-I.VIII.1%20%20Prior%20Learning%20Assessments%20for%20Academic%20Credit.pdf\">ULS Prior Learning Assessments for Academic Credit policy page.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Prior Learning Assessment Credit?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Credit includes learning acquired from work and life experiences; community and volunteer extension courses; individual study and reading; civic, community and volunteer work; and participation in informal courses and in-service training sponsored by associations, business, government, and industry. A grade of \u2018P\u2019, \u2018P-CR\u2019, or \u2018CRD\u2019 is awarded, which is included in earned hours, but not in the computation of any GPA or determination of academic standing.\u00a0The applicability of prior learning assessment\u00a0credit\u00a0to a degree is determined by the student\u2019s academic department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does PLA count toward TOPS, Scholarships and Financial Aid Requirements?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Credit earned through any prior learning assessment program does not count toward the TOPS award continuation\u00a0requirements of 24 earned credit hours per academic year. Credit earned through PLA does not count toward any scholarships that specify a number of credit hours earned. PLA credit does not count as hours attempted for Federal Financial Aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much PLA credit can I earn?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A maximum of 45 credit hours\u00a0of non-traditional credit, including, but not limited to,\u00a0extension credit, correspondence credit, and credit from prior learning assessments, may be used toward a bachelor\u2019s degree; a maximum of\u00a024 credit\u00a0hours of non-traditional credit may be counted toward an associate degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which PLA credit is right for me?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure that credit for a PLA will be counted toward a degree, you should always check with your academic advisor or department head. For some courses a student must obtain approval in writing from his\/her advisor and department head before registering for the course and must take the final examination under the supervision of the Office of Testing Services.
