All members of the University community share a commitment to academic freedom, open inquiry, the pursuit of knowledge, and the fair and respectful treatment of all individuals\u2014regardless of age, color, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, marital status, military status, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or other protected characteristics\u2014in admission, employment, and participation in educational programs, services, and activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading display-3\">Definitions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Civility<\/strong> requires treating others with dignity and respect and making a good faith effort to consider others\u2019 feelings. Even the most critical feedback must be delivered respectfully, privately, and courteously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of civility include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Treating others with dignity, courtesy, politeness, and consideration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speaking in appropriate tones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respecting others\u2019 right to express views, even when disagreeing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing conflict in respectful rather than confrontational ways<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Incivility<\/strong> includes a broad range of unprofessional behaviors such as rudeness, shouting, swearing, intimidation, bullying, or other conduct that causes offense, humiliation, or harm. It can be a single event or a pattern, overt or subtle, and may involve abuse of authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of incivility include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shouting or using abusive language<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Threatening behavior or props suggestive of violence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slamming doors or throwing objects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humiliating, degrading, belittling, or insulting others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disallowing divergent points of view<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading display-3\">Applicable Federal and State Laws<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The University complies with and enforces applicable laws, including but not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Civil Rights Act of 1964 (racial discrimination)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Title VII (sexual harassment\/discrimination)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Title IX (gender discrimination)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Executive Orders EWE 92-7; KBB2004-54 (sexual orientation discrimination)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Age Discrimination Act of 1967<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading display-3\">Concern, Grievance, or Complaint<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals who believe they have been treated with disrespect, incivility, harassment, or discrimination may discuss their concerns confidentially and informally with the Office of Campus Compliance and Civility.
