The group will perform two major works for this concert – “Missa Brevis St. Joannis de Deo” by Joseph Haydn and the first set, Opus 52, of “Liebeslieder Waltzes” by Johannes Brahms.
The centerpiece of “Missa Brevis St. Joannis de Deo” is the “Benedictus” movement, which was written for soprano soloist and organ. Student soloist will be Kaitlyn Colby, and although there will be no organ for this movement, the accompaniment will be supplied by Randel. The mass is one of Haydn’s most performed sacred works.
The second vocal chamber piece is scored for four-hand piano and will be performed by Randel and guest pianist Lina Morita. The texts for these pieces focus on the sentiments of joy and rapture of love. Opus 52 is one of Brahms’s most beloved and frequently performed works.
