McNeese State University invites qualified applicants for the position of Instructor/Assistant Director of Bands in the W.A. and Dorothy Hanna Department of Performing Arts.  This is a full-time, 10-month, unclassified, non-tenure track position.  The appointment begins in August 2020.

Position Description and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist the Director of Bands with the teaching and administration of a comprehensive university band program including two concert bands, marching band, jazz band, basketball pep band; assist with the recruitment and retention of talented undergraduate music majors, minors, and non-music majors for the Department of Performing Arts and the University Band Program; Assist in the coordination of the McNeese Regional Honor Bands, McNeese All-Star Marching Band, and McNeese Summer Music Academies; direct the basketball band; and be assigned additional teaching responsibilities in areas such as, but not limited to, music education, music theory, conducting, instrumental methods, or applied music as appropriate.



  • Masters degree in conducting or music education required, doctorate preferred. 
  • Evidence of successful secondary and/or college teaching in concert and marching band settings.
  • Extensive experience in basketball band.
  • Ability to manage and communicate on social media platforms
  • Commitment to teaching
  • Commitment to recruiting and retention of students
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability and desire to establish a collegial and team based working environment


  • Extensive experience in marching band and/or drum corps
  • Ability to arrange music and/or design drill.
