OPTION 1: Telephone Request
There are two options when you call the IRS, you can speak with a representative to have it faxed to you OR you can use the automated system to request a paper copy by mail.
You can request up to 10 transcripts per day. All requests are free
- Call 1-800-829-1040 and follow the steps below to have tax transcript mailed to you
- Press 1 to continue in English
- Press 2 to order a tax transcript
- Press 1 to order a transcript
- Press 2 for a tax return transcript OR 4 for tax history
- Enter the SS #
- Enter street address (numbers only)
- Press 2
- Enter year: 2016
If you would like to speak with an IRS representative to have your tax transcript faxed, please follow the steps below.
1. Call 1-800-829-1040
2. Press 1 to continue in English
3. Press 2 to order a tax transcript
4. Press 1 to order a transcript
5. Press 3 for all other questions about your tax history
6. Press 2 (for all other questions)
7. To access account information enter SS #
8. Please hold for the next available rep (the wait time could be more than 30 minutes)
Once the IRS representative is on the line, please ask for a 2016 tax return transcript to be faxed to you.

OPTION 2: Immediately Print Your Own Online
- Go to www.irs.gov/Individuals/Get-Transcript
- Click "Get Transcript Online"
- Create an account and sign up - requires several forms of electronic identification
b. IRS.gov will send a confirmation code to the email address you provided
c. Once the code is entered, you'll be prompted to complete several steps to confirm your identity
4. Once you have successfully setup an account, you will go back to the home page.

5. Choose Higher Ed and under Return Transcript click 2016.
a. The * symbol will indicate the availability of a Verification of Non-Filing Letter for the year. Click the
year that you are requesting a Verification of Non-Filing letter for, and a pop-up will come up.
Make sure that pop-up blockers are disable for this feature.
OPTION 3: Receive Paper Copy by Mail (Online Request)
- Available on the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov
- In the TOOLS section of the homepage click “Get Transcript”
- Select “Get Transcript by Mail”
- Enter the tax filer’s Social Security Number, date of birth, street address, and zip or postal code. Use the address currently on file with the IRS. Generally this will be the address that was listed on the latest tax return filed. However, if an address change has been completed through the US Postal Service, the IRS may have the updated address on file.
- Click “Continue”
- In the Type of Transcript field, select “Return Transcript” and in the Tax Year field, select "2016".
- If successfully validated, tax filers can expect to receive a paper IRS Tax Return Transcript at the address included in their online request, within 5 to 10 days from the time the on-line request was successfully transmitted to the IRS.

If you require face-to-face service call 1-844-545-5640 to schedule an appointment. An appointment is not needed to make a non-cash payment, pick up blank tax forms, or drop off a current year tax return.
