This holiday season, McNeese State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences is offering a CAMPP Meats Gift Box that includes two 16 oz. rib-eye steaks, sea salt and coarse black pepper for $39.99. Dec. 6 is the deadline to order.

Since 2012, the McNeese Center for Advancement of Meat Production and Processing (CAMPP) has provided valuable education and hands-on training for agricultural sciences students that will make them “first choice” for employers seeking the best employees.

The CAMPP facility is located on a 16-acre tract of land just off I-10 in Jefferson Davis Parish approximately 25 minutes from the McNeese main campus in Lake Charles.

Under the administration of the Harold and Pearl Dripps School of Agricultural Sciences, this modern meat processing facility contains equipment for processing beef, swine, sheep and goats, plus equipment for sausage making and custom meat processing, commercial refrigeration equipment and a retail sales area.

“Our students and faculty take pride in delivering the highest quality protein products to the community.  We partner the highest level of animal husbandry with the latest technology to produce these products,” says Dr. Chip LeMieux, dean of the College.

The CAMPP program not only focuses on meat processing but also on all related aspects such as packaging, preservation, marketing, transportation, quality assurance and food safety, according to LeMieux. “CAMPP is the only federally inspected red meat harvest facility in the state.”

All CAMPP meats are locally sourced from the McNeese Farm just off Highway 14, one of three university-run farms operating in Allen and Calcasieu parishes where students get practical hands-on experience in raising cows, pigs and goats.

Thanks to this unique farm-to-table operation, a CAMPP retail store operated by students is open to the public. The store – located in Room 121 of Gayle Hall on campus – sells cuts of meat that include steaks, roasts, tenderloins, bacon, ground meat and stew meat.

For more information or to order a CAMPP Gift Box, call 337-588-5008. CAMPP products can also be purchased at the Sassy Oil and Vinegar shop in the McNeese SEED Center.
