The foundation of the program is the 15 required workshop hours. Both fiction and poetry workshop are offered each semester asynchronously. Students take 12 hours (four semesters) in their major genre and 3 hours (one semester) in the non-major genre.
Form and Theory courses in both major and non-major genres and elective literature courses round out the online curriculum.
Six thesis hours must be completed during the final spring semester of the student’s time in the program. During these six hours, the student works with her thesis director (major genre professor) and with thesis committee members (professor from the cross genre, one additional faculty member) to develop, revise, edit, and format her thesis.
One final thesis hour is taken during the summer semester after the student's second year. The thesis will be submitted and defended during this summer term. Defenses will be conducted in-person, via teleconference, or via Skype.
