What is an internship?
Internships are structured, supervised, and short-term programs in which undergraduate or graduate students perform tasks and duties within an organization in order to gain knowledge and experience. The internship is usually performed over the course of one semester, or during a summer or winter break. The student may or may not earn monetary compensation from the company and/or academic credit from the university. Internship programs should benefit both the student and the organization.
Who is eligible for an internship?
Currently enrolled students who meet an employer’s hiring criteria may apply for an internship.The primary purpose of completing an internship is to gain career-related experience prior to graduation, build a future job reference, and benefit from networking and mentorship opportunities provided by the employer. With this in mind, students may apply for an internship with an employer at any time during their college career. In addition, students must meet internship course prerequisites as defined by their major curriculum, and they must be selected for an internship by the employer.
Are internships paid or unpaid?
Most internships are paid. The rate of pay is determined by the employer. Unpaid internships must meet the standards set forth by the U.S Department of Labor. Most non-profit and government organizations qualify to offer unpaid internships. View the Department of Labor standards.
How do I find an internship?
It’s not too late to line up an internship for the summer or next semester. Internships may begin throughout the year according to the intern employer’s hiring needs. It is important to visit the McNeese Office of Career Services or visit our Find an Internship page to connect with your department’s internship coordinator or to find out some of the best online resources. Students should also post their resumes and search opportunities on our Online Employment Board.
Can I earn academic credit for my internship?
To determine eligibility for academic credit for internships, students should first review the course prerequisites for an internship in their major, which are found in the Course Catalog, and then speak with their academic advisor to determine eligibility and complete the application for academic credit.
When should I apply?
While we strongly encourage every student to plan ahead and conduct a serious job search to find the ideal internship in a career path you are interested in pursuing upon graduation, student’s may apply for internships at any time. Interns may begin working at any time of the semester, according to the intern employer’s hiring needs. The semester of academic credit is determined by the student’s academic department.
Can I do more than one internship?
Absolutely! In fact, we strongly encourage students to do as many internships as possible. Internships represent on-the-job experience in your field of study, and career-related experience prior to graduation greatly enhances your resume as well as your job search upon graduation. In fact, data from the National Association of Colleges and Employers indicates that employers expect student’s to complete 3-4 internships prior to graduation. Note: The University does not guarantee the availability of internships. The student is responsible for conducting a job search to locate a suitable opportunity for their academic major.
