What is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound is a federally funded part of the TRIO program, which is a college preparatory program for high school students who are interested in going to college even though they may currently be achieving grades below their potential.

Our purpose is to inspire and instruct qualified students from LaGrange, Lake Charles-Boston, and Washington- Marion High Schools in literature, composition, foreign languages, mathematics, and science after school, on Saturdays, and during the summer. The summer session lasts six weeks and covers an intensive program. We also give participants personalized college preparation through personal counseling, academic advising, and tutorial assistance.

Counseling is offered to participants in areas such as career decision making, self-esteem, peer pressure, and goal setting. Graduating seniors may be eligible to receive a summer scholarship to McNeese State University that qualifies them to take up to six hours.

Who may apply?

Students in 9th, 10th, and 11th grades who attend Lake Charles-Boston, Washington-Marion, or LaGrange High School; are in good academic standing; and are seriously considering attending college may apply to the program. To be eligible, the parent(s) with whom the student lives can not have a degree from a four-year college, and the household income must fall below the federal income guidelines.
