Policies

The MSU Faculty/Staff Handbook provides policies pertaining to accuracy and consistency of university publications and promotional materials. For example institutional policy 406 states “To ensure that all written and visual promotional materials, publications, and advertising are clear, factually correct, current and consistent in describing the University, adhere to principals of good educational practice, accurately report the University’s equal opportunity, access policies, accreditation status, and trademark agreements, the Office of Media Services, in conjunction with the Office of University Image, has been designated as the clearinghouse for all University publications and video productions. The director of media services also serves as the coordinator for all information produced for the Internet (Web Pages) or other similar networks.”

The Policy on Student Publications states “Accuracy and truth are the main goals of all McNeese State University student publications. In addition, the advisers to student publications adhere to the Code of Ethics of College of Media Advisers, Inc.”

Recruitment Materials and the University Catalog

Recruitment literature and materials distributed by the university accurately represent admissions and other information about McNeese State University. Among other relevant information, recruitment materials contain information about admission requirements and processes, procedures for applying for financial aid, procedures for applying for housing, tuition and fees, student housing and dining costs, and general information about the programs offered at McNeese. Colleges and departments are encouraged to produce brochures about the specific programs offered, objectives of programs, and any other unique information about the programs which may be useful for the prospective student. Brochures are reviewed by the Office of Media Services for accuracy prior to publication or posting to the Web.

The University Catalog, which is provided to prospective students and incoming freshmen, and is available on the MSU Web page and in the Bookstore, is produced and edited in the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Academic Support. It is reviewed by the Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Academic Support and the Vice President for Academic Affairs for accuracy prior to publication.

Along with the University’s mission statement and core values, the Catalog contains detailed information about admission to the university, academic calendar and academic regulations, general education requirements, tuition and fee schedules, financial aid regulations and satisfactory academic progress expectations, various appeals processes, graduation requirements, learning support services available, and other information to assist students in successfully navigating their college experience. Academic program requirements and suggested sequence of courses are provided within each departmental section. Course descriptions are provided in a comprehensive list. Faculty members are listed with the institution at which their degrees were conferred. Accreditation status of any professionally accredited program is listed as required by the agency, and the statement indicating SACS accreditation is published as prescribed by the Commission on Colleges.

Each academic department and administrative unit reviews and updates their respective catalog information each year. The annual catalog review and update process is coordinated and administered by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Academic Support. Academic program updates to the Catalog are generated after University Curriculum Committee and Graduate Council actions have been approved by the Academic Advisory Council and vice president for academic affairs. The Dean of Enrollment Management/Registrar and Director of Admissions reviews and updates admission requirements, transfer of credit, academic regulations, and other information. Comprehensive information about admission requirements and financial aid procedures are also updated on the web page.

The university class schedule is published by the Registrar’s Office and is made available through an insert in the local newspaper, through the Registrar’s Office, and is posted to the Web page. The class schedule contains accurate and up to date information on admissions processes, academic calendar, course scheduling, registration for classes, fee payment deadlines, final exams, and other important dates.

Personnel from offices such as enrollment information, registrar, admissions, international student affairs, scholarships and testing, financial aid, student services, information technology, and media services work collaboratively on the Enrollment Management Team to develop all student recruitment publications. Each year recruitment materials are updated to ensure accuracy and consistency of information. The Chief Information Technology Officer, who serves as team leader, reports directly to the University President.

The President appointed an Enrollment Management Team to work closely with Noel-Levitz consultants in developing a comprehensive marketing plan and to develop strategies to properly implement such a plan. During this process every McNeese publication was reviewed, critiqued, and updated. The McNeese Marketing and Recruitment Plan 2003-2005 was developed and the university continues to implement the plan and to use effective communications and accurate information about the university as a guide to improving recruitment and retention.
