  RODEO TEAM   QUICK LINKS

There are rodeo scholarships available and the best way to receive one is to have the ability to do college level education work and win. The coaches and committee will look at what you have won, your SAT or ACT scores and grades to determine scholarships. Scholarships may vary from $400 per year to $5,000 per year. Students who are attending McNeese State University who are not receiving scholarships or smaller scholarships will be considered first for new scholarships. Community college transfers and high school graduates with outstanding records will then be considered. (Collegiate Regional Champions, National Champions, etc.)

You must fill out the Rodeo scholarship application, which you can print off online and send application, resume and video to the rodeo office.

Academic Scholarships are also awarded through the College, but you must complete the Academic scholarship application.

Scholarships will be award in June of each year and are very competitive.

Additional scholarship information is available through the Office of Scholarships and Testing.

Terry Lynn Cox Scholarship

Terry Lynn Cox was born on October 13, 1955 to James and Althea Cox. He has one brother, James A. “Bozo,” and one sister Beverly Cox. Terry was a Louisiana High School Rodeo Association participant from 1970 to 1974, competing in Team Roping and Calf Roping. He competed in national High School Rodeos in Denver, Colorado and Tomah, Wisconsin. Terry graduated from Grand Lake High School in May of 1974. He attended McNeese State University and was a member of the McNeese Rodeo Team competing in Team Roping.

On June 16, 1979, Terry married Valerie Sibille of Bell City, LA. On March 15, 1981, they were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Mindy Rachelle and then on October 13, 1982, they were again blessed with another beautiful girl, Sadie Lynne. Terry was a faithful husband and a loving father. There was nothing he would not do to try to keep is three girls happy. Terry is the one who encouraged his girls to sit on horses, run around barrels and poles, and rope the dummies. He also watched, with a keen eye, every boy that came through the kitchen door. He even had some of them complete applications to date his daughters.

Terry was in a tragic accident on December 30, 1999. He was working for the Cameron Parish Sheriff’s Department one early, Thursday morning. Terry stopped to help a disabled vehicle. He was directing traffic when a car accidentally hit him from behind and caused internal injuries, which were too serious to overcome.

Terry loved to help the kids in LHSRA and he knew the importance of a good education. He and I never talked about creating a scholarship, but I know he would be proud to have his name associated with the Terry Cox Memorial Scholarship.

The $2000 scholarship is given to a LHSRA senior who submits an application and plans to attend and rodeo for McNeese State University. The recipient will receive $250/semester for four years and an award plaque. He/She must compete in rodeo events for McNeese State University.

The Terry Cox family will determine the winner of the scholarship by the applications submitted and interviews of people in the LHSRA organization.

Please submit the attached application to Justin Browning, McNeese Rodeo Coach. If you want to verify the receipt of the application, email your request to vcox@flavinrealty.com no later than two weeks before LHSRA State Finals.

            Benjamin Hetzel   2000
            Brandon White     2003
