After competing in five rodeos this fall season, the McNeese State University women's rodeo team is ranked No. 3 in the nation by the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. The men's rodeo team is ranked No. 12.
Kyla Foster, Bell City, is ranked third in the nation in breakaway roping and third in All-around Cowgirl standings. Chelsea Carroll, Opelousas, is ranked seventh in both breakaway roping and in All-around Cowgirl standings. Paige Plush, Merryville, is ranked 15th in breakaway roping.
Lauren Hansen, Sulphur, is ranked No. 3 in the nation in goat tying, with Kirsten Smith, St. Francisville, ranked 13th and Foster ranked 19th in this same category.
Michael Houston, Belton, Texas, is ranked sixth in saddle bronc riding and Chad Rutherford, Ithaca, Texas, is ranked 16th in bareback riding.
"All of the athletes are putting a tremendous amount of effort into preparing for each rodeo event and they have so much confidence in themselves and each other," said McNeese Rodeo Coach Justin Browning. He said he was very proud to be able to coach these athletes.
In addition, Browning said the women's team is in first place in the NIRA Southern Region standings, while the men's team is in second place.
In the region, Foster is No. 1 in the women's All-around competition, while Carroll is No. 2. Billy Morian, Jasper, Texas, is No. 2 in the men's All-around competition.
In breakaway roping, Foster is ranked first, Carroll is second and Plush is third.
In goat tying, Hansen is first, Smith is second, Foster is third, Carroll is fifth and Jacqueline Gregory, Lamar, Mo., is sixth.
Rutherford is in second place in bareback riding, while Morian is ranked No. 5 and Ike Fontenot, Ville Platte, is ranked No. 6 in tie down roping.
In the saddle bronc riding event, Houston is No. 1 in the region, while Jack Frey, Crawfordsville, Ind., is third in bull riding.
In steer wrestling, Benjamin Cox, Hot Springs, Ark., is in fourth place.
In the team roping heading event, Morian is in fourth place and Fontenot is in fifth place, while in the team roping heeling category, Cox is in fifth place.
In the final two rodeos of the season, both men's and women's teams finished first at the McNeese rodeo Nov. 1-2, with Foster winning the Women's All-around Championship and Morian winning the Men's All-around championship, and the women's team took first place, while the men's team finished in fourth place at the Sam Houston State University Nov. 8-9, with Hansen winning the Women's All-around championship.
