The Alumni Association Faculty Development Award Program

Purpose

The Alumni Association Faculty Development Award Program provides financial support (seed money) for faculty efforts to conduct pilot studies or pursue applied research, service, scholarly, or creative work appropriate for the discipline. These funds should be used in such a way that will encourage scholarly activities above and beyond what the grant is funding. Project Investigators selected to receive support will be designated Alumni Association Faculty Development Award Recipient.

Administration

Proposals are submitted to the Office of Research Services and reviewed by the Peer Review Committee, which is composed of one faculty member from each academic College and the Library. Faculty selected to serve on the 2010 Alumni Association Faculty Development Award Peer Review Committee are as follows:
  • Ms. Janet Woolman, Committee Chair (non-voting) (475-5125)
  • Ms. Jeannie D. Robertson, Research Office (non-voting) (475-5124)
  • Dr. Douglas McNiel, College of Business (475-5560)
  • Dr. Carl Bartling, College of Education (475-5464)
  • Dr. Fred Denny, College of Engineering & Technology (475-5867)
  • Mr. Larry Schuh, College of Liberal Arts (475-5049)
  • Dr. Ann Warner, College of Nursing (475-5831)
  • Dr. Steven Stinnett, College of Science (475-5758)
  • Ms. Pati Threatt, Frazar Memorial Library (475-5731)

Eligibility

Eligible participants are those who hold full-time faculty appointments. Only one proposal per P.I. will be considered by the committee. In addition, duplicate proposals submitted to both the Shearman Initiative Fund and the Alumni Association Faculty Development Fund will not be considered for funding. Peer Review Committee members may not submit proposals.

Submission Process (for the 2010-2011 year)

The Office of Research Services must receive proposals by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, February 1, 2010. Please submit one signed original and eight copies of the completed proposal to the Research Services Office. The appropriate College Representative, Department Head and Dean must sign propsals. For additional information, contact Jeannie Robertson at Research Services (337) 475-5124.

Use of Alumni Association Faculty Development Award Funds

The use of funds is generally unrestricted as long as it is directly related to applied research, service, scholarly, or creative work appropriate for the discipline. Due to limited funding, computer equipment is not normally funded. The committee recommends the following guidelines.
  • Salaries for PIs or faculty are not allowed (NO Exceptions);
  • No funding to support activities normally supported by academic departments;
  • Computers are usually not funded;
  • Including students in the project is encouraged;
  • Faculty development activities directly related to the proposed project are eligible expenses (this includes attending and/or presenting project results at conferences or seminars) and must be justified and appropriate to the project.
