Chenier Plain Sustainability Initiative 2009-2010

Purpose

The Louisiana Environmental Research Center (LERC) will provide seed money grants for projects affiliated with the Chenier Plain Sustainability Initiative. Potential Chenier Plain seed money grants include but are not limited to, sediment stabilization, environmental sediment sampling, restoration, preservation, and other coastal landscape projects.

Geographical Parameters of Chenier Plain projects:
  • Extends from Vermillion Bay, Louisiana to Galveston Bay, Texas
  • Includes Chenier Plain, Coastal Prairie landscapes and the renewable resources within
  • Included are five major watersheds – Calcasieu, Mermentau, Natchez, Sabine and Trinity

Background

The Louisiana Environmental Research Center (LERC) was created in 1990 to conduct basic research, accumulate/disseminate information, and to create awareness through education on environmental issues and concepts related to wetland restoration/remediation. LERC studies and research efforts historically have been directed at wetland restoration, ecology, and the environmental effects of oil spills.

After the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, Louisiana set out to formulate a Master Plan for the Louisiana coastline. Thus, the Louisiana Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast was created. Currently, in order to implement Louisiana’s Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast, the focus of LERC has shifted to better facilitate monitoring and research of environmental issues and concepts related to wetlands restoration/remediation, with a primary emphasis on the Chenier Plain. The Chenier Plain Sustainability Initiative is consistent with the implementation of the Louisiana Comprehensive Master Plan. Recently, thanks to Congressman Boustany's efforts, McNeese received NOAA funding to continue the work ongoing at LERC. A portion of this funding is dedicated to fund proposals for seed projects related to this effort.
